Catching Up…

Clearly I am turning in to a boy and have lost the ability to multi-task… whilst trying to use Twitter more I’ve completely abandoned my Tumblr… So many images and updates to post from the last couple of months… stay tuned little Tumbles!

Can’t believe I waited so long to buy this lens… it’s been at the top of my list for a long time but it just never seemed like the right time to buy it. I was torn for a little while between the f/1.4 and f/1.8, but I really wanted the best aperture I could get without compromising on the kit material and quality. The f/1.4 allows you to photograph exactly what you see, as you see it, unlike the 18-55mm kit lens for which the lowest aperture available is about f/5.5, allowing hardly any light in to the lens. It is this wide aperture which also allows photos to be taken in low light conditions, indoors for example, without slowing the shutter speed or using a tripod. Some experimental photos I took tonight were in really ambient low light but the shutter speed was still at 1/20 seconds (the only compromise being the ISO which went to 1600 for these shots). I just can’t wait to get this lens outside and work on some portraiture! So excited!

A few of my favourite photos of Harry.

Generally, I refuse to brush my hair. In fact, it’s probable that I’ve brushed my hair less than 20 times this year. However, I have fallen slightly in love with the chic, neat little buns I’ve been lusting over in magazines. So I decided, just this once, I would be a real lady and brush brush brush.

And brush.

I have a lot of hair.

Still brushing.

Et voila!

I feel so fancy.

New York state of mind

I found my New York sketchbook today. It’s chock full of wobbly pencil sketches (due to the frostbite of/c), notes from Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers lectures, inspirational quotes I found littered around the city and addresses of my favourite places like the Empire State Building (350 5th Ave) and how to reach them by subway (take subway 6 to 33rd street). I also found the address to SJP’s four story Meat Packing District haven scribbled on the back pages, blotted by snowflakes. All of a sudden, I feel it is vital to my healthy that I eat a whole box of Red Velvet cupcakes from the Magnolia Bakery. I must re-trace my footsteps through the bookshops of Bleeker St. I need a stack of pancakes with maple syrup and I need them now.

Suffice to say I am absolutely, 100% convinced that I am suffering from NYC withdrawal symptoms. This is not good for my health. Until the day comes when I can once more stand at the top of the Empire State Building with a camera in one hand and a box of salted chocolate covered pretzels in the other… my illustrations of New York will have to do. Some of them I’ll leave as they were, others I plan on attacking with my box of paints. Upload to follow in the next few days.

Get atta taaawn.

Self-Portraits

I’m planning to do another self-portrait shoot tomorrow. I always thought of self-portrait photography as a little bit indulgent, kind of like an advanced version of the classic “here’s a photo of my reflection in the mirror that I took with my camera phone”. That was until I started getting serious about photography, and I needed to learn the ins and outs of my SLR and what it can achieve. Up until a few months ago I had never shot a serious portrait of anyone and so it was a real gap in my knowledge. After investing in a few more bits of camera equipment, I decided to take the plunge in to portraiture. And rather than pay someone to model for me (or use up my family’s limited spare time) I figured that I may as well be my own subject. Shooting this way has really helped me learn a lot about my camera. I’ve had to memorize function buttons (which will prove useful in future low light scenarios) and along the way I’ve learned about lighting and composition too. The hardest aspect of self-portraiture for me is not letting vanity or shyness get in the way of creativity; sometimes a creative shot isn’t necessarily a flattering shot! It’s all a learning curve I guess, but ohhh so exciting!

I love trees! I love climbing them, snoozing under them, I even planted a tree once. Apparently, I also love to photograph them. No matter where I am, my lens will always gravitate towards the branches overhead. I think they make such beautiful, natural compositions and they also make really flattering city shots as they contrast so well with the sharp structure of the surrounding buildings (New York was great for this, I got some great shots of skyscrapers from Central Park)

And here is me, climbing a tree. Thanks for the photo dad!

Here is a photo I took of the moon with my new Canon Telephoto lens attachment! As a massive space nerd, I don’t know how I have gone so long without owning one of these lenses. I love being able to take my own moon shots!
This is the Eastern side of the Moon! The long, large black smudge is Mare Serenitatis (Sea of Serenity) and Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility)
The three black spots are Mare Nectaris (Sea of Nectar), Mare Fecunditatis (Sea of Fecundity) and Mare Crisium (Sea of Crises).
The two most prominent white spots you can see are craters Stevinus and Langrenas.
The landing spot of Apollo 11 is at the Southwestern extreme of Mare Tranquillitatis.
The Lake of Sleep, Marsh of Sleep, Sea of Snakes, Sea of Waves, and Sea of Foam are also visible as are the mountain ranges Montes Alpes and Vallis Alpes. The manned lunar landings of Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 are also visible.

Today I was lucky enough to photograph some of the horses from the Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary, Northern Ireland charity. The sanctuary is dedicated to the rehabilitation of mistreated horses from all over the UK. It is so beautiful to see how happy and healthy the horses have become after dedicated care from such a small number of staff. For more info on the sanctuary or to donate online please visit http://www.crosskennanlane.org.uk/

A small collection of some of my favourite photos from my time living in London including Trafalgar Square, Parliament, Whitehall, Tower Bridge and The Tower of London.

New York, New York! What a magical place. I’ve wanted to go to New York since I was a child so my visit in January was a real dream come true. The thick blanket of snow made for some really stunning shots of the city (and a little frost bite), and despite the freezing cold the skies were bright blue and beautiful. I can’t wait to visit again, I would love to see the city in summer to get a different perspective.
